Health insurance coverage? Please help…?

Posted on Mar 07, 2008 under Insurance Information |

Is it possible to get healthcare coverage immediately when moving to the U.S. for a job if your wife is 7 months pregnant coming from Europe. We pay into a private plan in Europe and don't know if it helps. I tried emailing companies in the states and have not received any replies… Has anyone been in this situation? .
My wife is a U.S. citizen and we don't know anyone for her to stay with in the country.
Possibly the company will have to wait or I will have to decline the position…

  1. Most companies in the US offer their employees healthcare, but some offer it right away and others require you be employed for at least 6 months first.

  2. A lot of companies require you to be employed for at least 30 days before recieving health care benefits. I am not sure if your Europe coverage would work over here. You may want to relocate first and have your wife come after the probation period just in case anything happens in that 30 days you don't have coverage.

  3. Some Health Ins companies also considers pre existing conditions and they might not cover these rest of the pregnancy.

Good luck with your new job and new baby

  4. A company can choose 0 days to a 90 day waiting period. It’s up to them. If you apply for a job you are not obligated to give health related answers and you should never discuss this during the interview. So do not contact companies that your interested in and say you have a pre-existing! A group plan must cover people with pre-existing conditions. A pregnancy is a pre-existing condition, and if you buy individual health insurance they will decline. Also it is very expensive to add to a plan.

  5. You pay for a private plan where you live. Contact them and see if it will cover her here until the group insurance kicks in.

You already have a position here, right? Find out what the waiting period is for the group insurance. The previous poster was incorrect-pregnancy cannot be considered pre-existing on a group policy, but there is probably a waiting period to be eligible for it.

Worst case scenario if you don't get the eligiblilty by the time your wife delivers, you pay cash-almost all doctors and hospitals have discounted cash rates for pregnancy.
