Auto Insurance coverage on a crunched door by a driver who drove away?

Posted on Mar 10, 2008 under Insurance Information |

If the car door was slammed by a passing car and damaged, crushed a little and bent, difficult to close the door, does insurance cover something like this?
What kinds of things does insurance over, if the person who did it, drove away?

Just call your insurance agent and ask them.

How are we supposed to know what sort of policy
    you have?

  2. each policy is different and sometimes its just better to pay for something like that out of pocket rather than submit it to your insurance because your deductible can be high. also is you have uninsured motorist it would cover a driver fleeing the scene too…it really just depends on your auto insurance company, you'll have to call and ask them.

  3. You're asking questions that would require someone to see your policy to answer.

Them driving away doesn't matter much though, if anything they did you a favor since this would be your fault for opening the door into the path of a moving vehicle. Now at least you don't have to worry about the damage to their car. You should have looked first.

Providing your insurance is Fully Comprehensive (3rd party, fire and theft), then yes - they'll pay.

In insurance claims, the insurer will get the money for the repair from the person who caused the accident / damage. However, as this was a 'drive away' incident, the insurance company will not have the guilty party to claim the money from….. this means not only will you be paying the 'excess' portion of your insurance *but* there is also a chance that next year when your insurance premium comes up for renewal that it could increase.

I'd contact a few garages and see what they would charge for the repair of your door, find out what your excess is and then weigh up the pros and cons of either repairing privately or via your insurance company.

Also - if the repair takes a few days you may not get a loan car so you'll be without a vehcile which could pose a problem for you if you only have one car and need it to commute.

Having been a victim of these door slammers I understand your frustration!
