License should only be required if you discuss coverages with a customer/consumer - but this could be State specific or Company specific.
Depending on the license, it could be hard but NOT if you study!

you don't have to get a license to work at an insurance company, but if you want to sell insurance you should get one.
as for difficulty: how much knowladge do you have now?

You need license to sell insurance and discuss coverages and premiums. Test is not too hard, however i think the first time passing ratio is about 25%. I got mine from a second attempt
