pet insurance?
Posted on Mar 14, 2008 under Insurance Information |so i called vpi pet insurance to sign up..and since my puppies had previous ear infections, they said it would be considered a preexisting condition and not cover ear infections for a year..i think that's baloney..so still shopping around.my pups are 5 months old and need to be spayed/neutered so premiums will cost more…any suggestion?
oh and the humaine society is out of the question, they haven't had all their shots yet and i wouldn't want them exposed to stray dogs and diseases..i'm going to my regular vet it's costing $550 for two dogs including their shots and microchipping.whew i just figured it would be good to have insurance "just in case".

I think pet insurance is probably not worth the money. I sort of changed my tune on this when my dog had to have very expensive surgery last summer. But the more I think about it, they probably would have found a way to call it a preexisting condition, since it was the result of leftover tissue from when she was spayed. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise by data from the pet insurance industry, but I suspect that they will find a way to make any really expensive condition "preexisting".

chuck the insurance unless the dogs have very expensive medical conditions or they are geriatric and need vet care ALL the time.

if you call humane socity and explain that you have any kind of hardship and you want to spay neuter a dog sometimes they will help you as much as 50 % the cost

Put the money you would pay for the insurance in a savings account or CD each month for when your dog needs it. The insurance is pretty selective about what they cover and how much so I think you should save the money yourself. If your dog has a pretty healthy life you might just have started a retirement account:)

Go to the humane society. They have books there with lists of vets that have agreed to spay/neuter animals for a reasonable amount, far less than going to vets that are not on that list. It includes the price that the vet charges when you have a human society certificate. You can buy the certificate that goes with the vet of your choice or else you can write down some vets and their numbers and call them before you decide. Incidentally, they do charge different rates for different problems, such as babies and they each charge different fees, so you need to look at that too. Vet insurance is so expensive.

There are lots of different pet insurance companies and plans. It's important to check around and carefully research each one, as they can vary much more than you would expect.
Many won't cover pre-existing conditions, but some may. It's really just a case of shopping around. Some plans don't cover routine visits, shots or medicines either.
However, if your pups do fall seriously ill, or have an accident the cost of health care could force you into debt or worse. Having them covered gives you peace of mind, and protects your bank account/credit rating!

i checked into insurance and declined, i have 3 dogs and they r all very healthy, i just take them for their shots and as far as being spayed/neutered they have places for dogs and cats for half the price. i went ahead and let the vet do it because i trust him but i haven't heard of any negative things about the other company's that does it at a discount. i would try them and as far as the shots they have people that comes to some neighborhood and charge at least half of the price that the vet charges. good luck.
