Will my husband's insurance cover my pregnancy if I'm already pregnant when added to his policy?
Posted on Mar 15, 2008 under Insurance Information |I just found out that I am pregnant and have no insurance. Fortunately, I am engaged and due to be married next month. My future husband does have health insurance and I can be added. I'm only concerned because most insurers have a mandatory 10 month waiting period for maternity coverage to begin. I'm wondering if this is also true when being added to an existing plan…my fiance has had the plan for two years. To make matters worse, I know I cannot qualify for US medicaid because I am currently living overseas.

I'm sure that no one will cover you if you get insurance AFTER the fact. Sorry about that.

If it's a group policy (through an employer) yes. If an individual policy-no. You will need to make arrangements to pay cash for your doctors visits and delivery. All doctors and hospitals (at least in the US) have cash discounts or rates for pregnancy because it is often not covered by insurance. Make arrangements in advance so you know what to expect and don't forget incidentals like charges for epidurals. A c-section will cost you more than a vaginal delivery, so make sure you ask about that!

In my state, Illinois, pregnancy can not be considered a pre-existing condition on a group policy. If your husband is on a group policy through his employer, marriage is a qualifying event and you can be added to his policy, just do it in the 30 day window. If you do have a pre-existing condition besides pregnancy that condition would most likely not be covered for 12 months depending on the policy of his company.
If he has an individual policy, then your pregnancy will not be covered. If that is the case, I would see if you could find out if the state has a program for pregnant women and look into that.
Good luck and Congratulations!

This is a question to be asked by your fiance of his employer. If it is an individual policy, forget it and make a package deal with a doctor and pay monthly. Be sure to raise a smart and caring child. Thank you.

All good prior answers:
As was stated, group insurance - maybe / maybe not - leaning more to the "maybe not". Individual insurance - unfortunately definately not. Your being pregnant is a "pre-exisiting condition".
However, the good new's is that your child would be coverered under your future husband's insurance, usually right away - check with his company.
Even with a normal, healthy child, medical costs are high. You shouldn't have to worry about his / her care.

As long as your husband adds you to his policy within the policy stated time limit following your marriage there is a possibility that your pregnancy will be covered. The only way to be sure is to read the terms of the policy.
