Health insurance for a single male (43) with health issues and very low income. Who, what, and where?
Posted on Mar 18, 2008 under Insurance Information |My 43 yr old brother was just hospitalized with a minor stroke. High blood pressure is cause. He will need to be on prescribtion meds for the rest of his life. He has no health insurance, single, and makes a very low income. Where can he find a health care provider that will cover his meds that he needs to survive?

He should apply for social security disability.

His only viable options would be to get a job that offers health benefits or to get on Medicaid. None of the individual major medical policies will cover someone who's had a stroke or if they will accept him the meds and high blood pressure will be considered as pre-existing and will not be covered.
It will depend upon your state but many states have Medicaid plans for people that are medically needy. These plans allow a higher income and asset level than basic Medicaid.
Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well.
Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients.

I can relate. My Grandmother is in the same situation for a long time. HBP meds are expensive, especially when they need them to survive. I found this website,
http://www.healthsavings.ourperfectcard.com
They are extremely affordable, quick, and no gimmicks. I purchased the program for my Grandmother about 3 years ago and we have saved thousands from the benefits of Rx and more. I would encourage anyone in your/our situtation to visit the site, and see how they can help.
Good Luck and God bless.
