I am partial to State Fram as I have been insured with them for over 35 years off and on, and my Dad used to work for State Farm in the corporate offices in Bloomington, Illinois.
However, they do have different coverages on auto's, trucks, SUV's, etc.
Each have distinctive add-on's to your basic car insurance.
It will be difficult at the best to try and compare them side to side for coverage though.
FInd a family member or someone that knows an adjuster and ask them who is best
You must have many qualifications to be a State Farm holder: you must have a clean driving record of 3 points or less for the past 6 years and you must be driving for at least 3 years (or 21 years old). Also, you can qualify for discounts if you are married, if your house has a certain alarm system, and things of that nature. Allstate, I do not know much about; however I know that both of their rates are around the same and they both have competitive rates. If you are looking solely for "cheap" insurance, then Mercury is your best bet. I would generally chose State Farm since it provides personal agent service and the agent is "there for you."
Both are probably financially secure. State Farm was hit with a HUGE law suit a few years ago and because of that they do a better job of making sure your vehicle is repaired properly. Allstate is known for using inferior parts and annoying repair facilities, but may have cheaper rates. That's my .02 cents.
CwboyBill….It was overturned because of the "clout" you talk about. State farm had time to align their ducks and their legal team to get the issue overturned. That doesn't mean that they were right. The lawsuit had an effect on the company's business practices. I repair autos for a living and State Farm was putting junk on cars and defrauding the policy holders before the law suit. Just because they were able to prove some "what the definition of is is" stunt ( remember Bill Clinton's out) doesn't prove anything. I suppose you work for State Farm right?
I've used both and would say both have great service. Usually it comes down to price as it varies depending on where you're located. Try using http://My-InsuranceSearch.com to compare rates from all the major providers, including All State and State Farm.
To the person that commented about State Farm losing a big lawsuit, they did indeed lose a billion dollar + suit years ago concerning aftermarket parts, however, two years ago the decision was overturned in superior court and the policy was upheld. Long story short — State Farm is a giant company that employs thousands of people and has the clout to get things done, which is a good thing for the policy holders. They have reduced rates for the last three years and have a claims network that is unbelievable. Think about it — have you ever been to a town that didn't have a State Farm agent? Which means that if you have a wreck in Moosedrop Montana on a Saturday afternoon you can be sure that there will be a State Farm employee nearby to assist. They are a premium company and their rates reflect that when compared to many online companies but, hey — you usually get what you pay for.
State Farm. my 1st accident wasn't my fault, the other guy has Allstate, but Allstate only paid me 75% of the claim, i had sue them for the other 25%. 2nd accident it was my fault, i had state Farm, they paid my car whole and in 2 weeks i was be able to buy a new car and on the road again.

Theya re both:
A little on the expensive side
Have good coverages
Have great products
A pain in the ass to deal with on claims
Independent insurance adjusters don't like them
Other than that, they basically are the same.
