Do I have to have auto insurance when driving a uhaul?

Posted on Mar 26, 2008 under Insurance Information |

Ok so My boyfriend and I are planning on renting a uhaul in a few months for our move from Florida to California. We currently do not have auto insurance. If we get pulled over will they ask for proof of insurance? Do we need insurance to drive a rented vehicle? Also does uhaul offer insurance? What does it cover and how pricey is it?
I told my bf that you probably dont need insurance to drive a rented vehicle but he disagrees with me. So if you can help me prove him wrong I'd greatly appreciate it.
Mr. Robinson: You do not have to bring it make where you rented it from. theres over 1400 uhaul location in the us all you have to do is drop it off at the local dealer that you choose when you reserved the truck.

Thanks for the quick responses!
Thank Billy
And yes I know Im from there. This is my second road trip move so far. The first was in sept '06 From Cali to Florida. Now were going back and we can afford the rental truck. Last time we packed a car full of shit, I'll never do that again.
How much is the insurance they offer?

  1. No, but make sure you check the dmg's before taking it off there lot, I drove one last week to help my gf's sister and we got a banged up one. They offer some protection service thing which is cheap that covers damage done to it that was caused while in your hands and just as long as you have a drivers license you're all set.

nope… when driving a rented vehicle you can purchase the insurance, but if you dont want to… then its fine… but how the hell are you gonna drive from florida to cali, then bring the vehicle back to flordia lol… its gonna be alotta gas money :P

  3. you either have to have your own auto insurance.or purchase a policy from u-haul for the duration of your trip.

  4. You need to have insurance to drive it. If you don't have insurance you can purchase it from Uhaul. They will not let you rent if you don't show them prrof of insurance or buy there. Good luck with your move Cali is great

  5. Even if you have auto insurance, it will not extend to a Uhaul truck because personal auto insurance only extends to private passenger vehicles.
You have to purchase all of the insurance (liability & collision) offered by Uhaul. We did even though we had car insurance. It wasn't expensive when we rented ours, I don't even remember what it was so it didn't stand out as an expense.
Uhauls are big & if you are not used to driving a big vehicle, there is more of a chance of something going wrong from misjudging the room you have. If you ever hit someone with it & you didn't have the insurance, you would owe for damages to their vehicle, bodily injury & car rental (which could be many thousands of dollars) out of your own pocket & this could easily happen hundreds of miles away from where you did live or will be living, what a mess. Plus, you would owe for damages to the Uhaul truck. Can you afford that?? It is so much cheaper to purchase the insurance, for your own peace of mind, even if you never have to use it.
Be sure you purchase enough mileage. They will ask for your destination so be sure if you have to go off the standard route, you get some more mileage. When we moved we had to do that because we were staying with friends 25 miles out of the way of the trip & we told them that, they were OK with it & changed our destination city a little & it worked.

  7. We do not ask for proof of insurance. That is something you are responsible for. What U-Haul offers is a protection plan called Safemove, not insurance. It covers any damage to the truck, covers the contents while inside the truck, and has a limited personal injury protection. Just for reference I looked up Orlando to LA and the Safemove was $140. They do offer a Super Safemove which has the addition of $1 million in liability and that would be $280. Going that far, I would at least get the Safemove. If someone hit you and damaged the truck, you would be covered.

The following is what you would sign if you did not take the Safemove:

    1. Credit cards and most auto insurance DO NOT cover U-Haul rentals.
    2. You are responsible for ALL damage regardless of fault including windshields, tire damage, towing and storage fees and downtime (loss of use) while the vehicle is being repaired.
I will immediately reimburse U-Haul for all damage and losses incurred upon return of the rental equipment and then applicable seek reimbursement from any third party's insurance company.

There are lots of people having the same question like you and yours is just another one. Basically speaking about auto insurance<!–auto insurance is the most widely purchased type of insurance coverage. auto insurance is designed to protect you, your family, and your automobile. You may get your query answered here,

Cheap auto insurance is a popular avenue these days, but you should be sure that you're getting all of the coverage you need, as damage to your auto or another–>person's auto may cost you money out-of-pocket if you don't have sufficient coverage and your auto insurance rate may go up.
