Insurance?
Posted on Mar 27, 2008 under Insurance Information |HERE'S THE THING. I was staying in a Bed and Breakfast, and I accidentally knocked a glass off the shelf above the sink. It fell into the sink, remained perfectly intact, but the sink suffered a small hole in the basin. The owners now want me to pay for sink repairs, which I think might be pretty dodgy. They say they're not insured, but I rather thought that B&Bs and the like were required by law to have insurance. Accidents happen, and I don't think they can expect their customers to pay for the damage. So, am I liable to pay?

Assuming this is US, a B&B operating without insurance is highly unlikely, if not outright illegal. What they probably mean is that such a repair would be under their deductible, so they want you to pay, or they don't want to report it to their insurer for fear their rates will go up. They could probably take you to court, but unless it is some highly valuable antique sink, it wouldn't be worth their time. You could suggest they get three estimates to have it repaired, and you agree to pay half of the middle priced estimate, after the work is done.

Not sure about the UK, but insurance is not REQUIRED. It's pretty stupid for them not to carry insurance, but it's there choice. The other poster is right. They can take you to Court, but that would end up costing more than to repair the sink. Same thing, I would agree to pay half. They have to expect some level of damage if their inviting strangers to stay and accidents do happen. Good luck!
