Shopping for Auto Insurance. Do I list ALL violations?

Posted on Mar 31, 2008 under Insurance Information |

I am currently shopping for auto insurance and realize most insurance companies ask me what violations or accidents I have had in the past 5 years. The thing is, in CA, violations drop off my record in 3 years. I have had violations 4 or 5 years ago, but they off dropped off my record, do I need to tell the insurance companies about these violations since they were within the last 5 years, but have dropped off my record already?
I seriously do not remember what tickets and accidents I have been in int he past 5 years, the only info I have is what is on my driving record (past 3 years). Is there any way to get this info, or can the insurance company find out before I purchase the insurance? Someone mentioned it takes the insurance company 30-60 days to get all the info and my rates could go up.

You might as well say everything, you might get a good rate quote as soon as company runs your report you will get a bill for higher insurance.

If you don't tell all they can find out anyway, Because this is the age of the computer and they can find out anything and go back as far as they desire even if the points fall off. Some insurance companies even base there rates on your credit rating as well.

  3. There are lots of people having the same question like you and yours is just another one. Basically speaking about car insurance<!–Car insurance is the most widely purchased type of insurance coverage. Car insurance is designed to protect you, your family, and your automobile. Cheap car insurance is a popular avenue these days, but you should be sure that you're getting all of the coverage you need, as damage to your car or another–>person's car may cost you money out-of-pocket if you don't have sufficient coverage and your car insurance rate may go up.

  4. no ever heard of TMI go to L.A. insurance or one of these cheap corner store co's where they don't ask too many questions.

Anytime you change insurance companies, they all have different underwriting criteria and want to know about your history. They may only CHARGE you for violations but, they may want to know about OLDER incidents - just to see how you may have improved and "learned your lessons."

I have one company in my agency that asks "have you EVER been involved in a motor vehicle accident?" and "Have you EVER been arrested?"

So - it COULD be worse! It would be BEST to list EVERYTHING they ask for because if you don't and they reveal something during their underwriting period (normally 30-60 days, depending on your State) they could reject your application or charge you more money or both!

You would be best served by a LOCAL independent agent that has several companies to select from to help control your insurance costs!
Good luck and I hope this helps!

  6. I don't know what stage you're in with your shopping. But if you want a general quote without the total detail check this site out http://www.ez-insurancesearch.com Find the cheapest here before you start calling the agents.

  7. Go to your local DMVand request an audit of your driver license. It will list any accidents / moving violations reported in the past 39 months.

Unless the carrire you are considering requires otherwise, only report what is on the audit.
