its expensive
many employers cover most of the costs for the employee but not for their family members. So insurance for a family can be $400-$500 per month, and that doesnt cover deductibles etc.
I dont see how Clinton mandating these people to buy insurance and taking it from their checks is "universal healthcare"
Universal healthcare is the government providing healthcare to its citizens, not mandating insurance.

$189 per month. I make some sacrafices (like not getting an ipod or the top of the line cell phone, my car is five years old, and I live modestly) but I do pay for my health insurance, and I also pay for my car insurance. Can I afford it? Not really. Do I pay for it anyway? Yes.
It has to do with priorities.

Ours is $170 monthly for 4 people and that is with my husbands employer paying the largest portion of it. It is really expensive is why most can't afford it, if he didn't have benefits at work I don't know what we would do.

Some people can't afford it b/c they don't want to work. I work, raise my children, go to college, etc.. and my insurance is out the roof. My co-pay is $70.00. However, I am still against universal health care.
Ours cost over 400 a month

Noelle: I totally agree with you!

LoneStar: again, I agree with you.

My health insurance is $65 per week for our entire family. It comes out of my paycheck (I get paid weekly, so it comes out to $260 per month). I am lucky that through work we have fantastic health care benefits, much better than those my husband's company offers.
Some people don't get discounted insurance through work because they are only offered insurance if they work full time. So part time workers are not covered, and people who don't work are not covered. Although people on disability are covered through medicaid, and retired people are covered through medicare.

The only thing I know about the cost is that it's expensive. People can afford it or struggle to pay for it because the pharmaceutical industry, and others, inflates their costs so their CEOs can have more than one yacht.

I am 25 and I have no preexisting conditions and my healthcare costs over 200 dollars per month and that was for a plan that did not include perscription benefit or dental. Most people don't realize the large cost of health care because they get it from their jobs and pay a small percentage of the actual cost. When I purchased an individual plan while I was out of a job it was over 200 dollars per month. That is more than my car payment.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
I pay $494 a month as I am self employed…. that's a big chunk of money and by the way, that is for me…and I am in excellent health, don't smoke, so imagine if you are in worse health, the cost goes up more….
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
Almost $300.00 a month, each year the premiums go up, the coverage goes down…
I have checked for other insurance companies the cost much more for even less coverage.
With this said, we DO NOT need a national health care program. We need an insurance system that is fair as well as a health care system that is fair to all.

For my husband and I, our insurance is $630/month. For our daughter who graduated from college last year, $420/month and for our son who is still in college, it's $318/month. In total, our health insurance is roughly $1368 per month. Why can't people afford it, geeze, you tell me!!!
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
You think you can afford it if the Government taxes you to death for it too? Do you really think the federal government will have the ability to manage a health care system? So far they have bungled social security, mis managed Medicaid, made a farce of welfare and destroyed our public schools. And now some of you think its a good idea to give them a shot at health care! Great idea!
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
I think if people actually worked then they would be able to afford healthcare. I am all for making health care affordable. I am totally against a mandated Universal Health Care plan.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
I pay $44./month for Alberta Health Care. The government pays for everything else. I don't have to pay when I see my doctor.
Prescriptions are not included in this fee, buy my employer covers any prescription costs. I am lucky because my employer also covers me for 100% of any dental costs.

I pay about 70.00 two times a month for myself, and that's a 80/20 plan with a 2500.00 deductible I have meet before any benefits are paid through the insurance. Then the 80/20 plan kicks in.
Thinks that's a good deal, think a bout this:
I go to the ER with a broken limb(preferably an arm, they are cheaper), get xrays, casted, and seen by 2 docs, the ER and the Ortho, one xray tech, and nurses.
The bill, $3600.00. I have to pay 2500.00 off the bill, then my insurance kicks in and and they pay 80% of the remaining balance, and I owe the hospital on top of that 220.00, my 20%. Then my follow up care may cost roughly, 360.00 per visit, for more xrays, and resetting, and I'm being nice with the estimate, I have to pay 25.00 co pay, and 72.00, my 20% again, every visit, which would normally be about maybe every two weeks until the cast is removed, which would normally be 8-10 weeks, which in turn would cost about 3100.00 for one broken limb, and I would hope that if this were to happen, it would be an arm, because a leg is more expensive to re set and sometimes needs surgery.
Also, I would like to say that this does not cover my children, their insurance is offset by a government program, since healthcare is so expensive.
If it weren't for programs lke these, we wouldn't be able to afford healthcare.

how many people w/o health insurance have :
cell phones?
new cars?
flat screen tvs?
They choose to spend their money elsewhere and expect the gov't to come to the rescue!
Gov't healthcare isn't free healthcare!!!! We still have to pay for it!

I dont care how educated one is, there are only so many jobs out there. That statement proves how educated you are about the society we live in.
and all the bad flaggers are proof to my statement. they havent got a clue. Wait till your in the real world.
Do you all believe that there are 100 thousand dollar a year jobs out there for each and every one of you? gotta to be obama supporters if so.

People can't afford it because of choices they made when they were younger. There are programs already in place to take care of people who do not have the means to. If you did not go to college, developed a drug addiction, you are lazy, etc.. I am sorry, but why should I have to pay for someone who is perfectly fine. I know no one wants to hear this, but you have to deal with the choices you have made. I know people say not every one is afforded the choice you have been given, but I grew up extremely poor. I worked my butt off to get through college, and still paying on the loans. If I can do it anyone can. If you can not afford Ins. that is your problem not mine.

$186 per month. Healthcare is way too expensive, that's why people cannot afford it.

If a person makes around minimum wage…and works in a retail store which may keep their hours at lets say…around 35….and then, let's just estimate that they have a family and their insurance is about 200 dollars a month…you do the math…NOW…on top of that, figure this part…for that amount of money the insurance policy is not that great…their copay on medication is 20.00 a pop….they don't hit their deductible until $2,500 or MORE and then they still pay 20 percent of the bill per person–and if they go to the hospital for tests the hospital wants the money UP FRONT for MRI,and such…and there are many, many people who are in this very position…is it any wonder they try HARD to stay away from the DR because they are in fear of having medical tests that they cannot afford their portion on…medication they cannot afford…physical therapy they cannot afford because there are clauses and limitations on this. Even people with moderate incomes well above minimum wage feel this way. Insurance comes with more and more loopholes designed for the company to evade paying…we surely ARE in a healthcare crisis–yet much of it IS due to years and years of abuse by false claims, frivolous lawsuits and insurance companies that were taken advantage of by lawyers and people looking to get rich quick–the sue happy who can't seem to hold on to a cup of hot coffee. Now the insurance companies are making every one pay

I had health care insurance through my job and it costs $45.00 a week and it is horrible coverage. When I broke my ankle and was out of work for 10 weeks (I am a waitress) my company cancelled my insurance cause we have no kind of paid sick leave and they told me I needed to apply for Medicaide. They cancelled cause I wasn't able to pay my premium cause I couldn't work. No kind of disability coverage at all. So now, even though I work for the same company, I do not have their ratty insurance because of the kind of insurance it is, they wouldn't pay for my hospital or doctor visits and I ended up with a permanently messed ankle due to the fact it didn't heal properly from lack of medical treatment I could not get. Cute huh?

Our health insurance for a family is about $400 per month with a high deductible and very poor prescription coverage. To put it in perspective as to why many people cannot afford coverage, that equates to 85 hours of gross wages at minimum wage. When you consider taxes, it is well over 90 hours of work for the minimum wage earner. Even if you assume that people are making no less than $7.00/hour (which even in my fairly high cost of living area they often aren't), it still would eat up half of your monthly salary once you get done paying taxes.
I have a magnet from a trip to Alcatraz that states one of the prison rules: You are entitled to food, clothing, shelter, and medical care, everything else is a privilege. For the low income wage earner, you can probably drop off the last prison entitlement to get a picture of what you can expect your average minimum wage earner to be able to afford.
P.S. I don't know that universal health care is the answer either. I see that as a way for big Pharm to yet bleed more money out of Americans' pockets. Perhaps we need to get rid of insurance altogether thereby forcing medical costs to hit its actual market price or create a sliding scale based on income.
P.S.S. I have not one, but two college degrees, and my husband is a highly skilled tradesman. We have a company and can only afford the bottom of the line coverage for ourselves, and forget about anything at this time for our employees. I priced plans for group health insurance and it was totally unaffordable.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:44 am
Well I drive a taxi and it costs me about 500$ month. I include my children on that plan but that IS the discount rate where I am.
The real truth is this:
We ALREADY HAVE health care for the poor. It is called Medicaid/ Medicare . People who are poor or working class qualify for these programs. It is currently ILLEGAL for hospital emergency rooms to refuse people treatment. Universal Health Care is really aimed at making health care cheaper for the middle class and the rich.
Don't believe the hype. While IT IS TRUE that we could use a serious reduction in the price of prescription drugs, health insurance by itself is NOT an issue affecting the poor.
PEACE

My health insurance is free! The company I work for pays for it. I have to pay a co-pay of $15 for every office visit, we have a prescription plan $38 for brand and $10 generic.. I also get 1 free routine physical (per year) paid in full up to $300. even though I don't have to pay,the coverage has changed due to other workers being so ill. If I wanted to cover my sons, I would have to pay $200+ per month for them. Their dad covers them through the military so it's cheaper.
as far as making healthcare affordable, that's a good idea, but letting the government mandate or handle it..nah no good. It'll never work.
