what is a lien? insurance whise?

That means that any settlement you get, the attorney is entitled to a portion of it.
He would need to prove what portion he is entitled to though (so how much work he actually did on the case). A lot of attorneys threaten it, and then never actually follow up because they know they didn't do a lot of work, but some do.
If you get another attorney, and the first one asserts a lien, your new attorney would settle the lien for you.

jerry's got a lot of it, but anyone can file a lien. anybody who feels they are entitled to part of your settlement can file a lien. this includes medical providers if you have a worker's comp claim or injury from an auto accident, or your attorney and such.
