what can i do if i feel depressed but i don't have the money or insurance to seek help?

Posted on May 31, 2008 under Insurance Information |

I have felt for years that I've been struggling with depression. I can't remeber most of my childhood and my teens, and I'm only 22. The things I do remeber aren't pleasant and just recently family members that I trust have told me some disturbing details of my life that I just can't remember. These past few months I have been going in a downward spiral. The thing that made me realize I really had a problem was today I was feeding my 4 month old son and though, if it weren't for him I probably would have attempted suicide by now. I want to get help for him and my loving and supportive boyfriend. We just don't have the money or any insurance for it. Please, what can I do?

join a group that deals with depression. i dont think the cost anything, if you got a best friend that cares let her listen to you cry and talk it out. you;ll feel better.

Look in the phone book under counseling, or something similar. Most cities have free 24-hour services that can help you find someone to speak with. That's if you feel you are overwhelmed with depression. If it's minor depression, exercise. Studies have shown that exercising can be just as effective as an anti-depressant for someone who is only moderately depressed.

  5. Most areas have county mental health professionals who don't charge. Look up your county services online or in the phone book.

  6. pray.

  7. Check with a University or State Hospital in your area, sometimes they offer health care for free or at a very low cost.
When I was 19 I got real sick with a sinus infection and did not have health insurance. I went to the University Hospital in the city that I lived in and only had to pay a $5.00 copay to see the doctor. It cost me around $5.00 for a prescripton. They also had a program that covered my birth conrtol pills and pap smears.

  8. I suffer from depression too and felt the same when my daughter was young. I was given a combo of wellbutrin and depakote and they were amazing. eventually i also was without insurance so i had to give them up but recently i started taking amitriptyline for help sleeping but it has some antidepressant effects as well and it is really cheap i have no insurance and take 1 x 50mg per day and it is only about 10.00 a month. ask your doctor if it might work for you..but dont let depression take over your life because life is too short to be unhappy ..good luck

  9. There should be a County Health Department in your area where you can seek free health care, also see if you have a "MHMR" (mental health mental retadation) office nearby. These places usually can help with medications also if needed and charge (or not) based on your income.
