Unless you have a breast mass or a very strong family history of breast cancer, 37 is still pretty young for a mammogram. The breast tissue of a 37 year old is still pretty dense, and that looks white on the film, so it is hard to see any masses on the film. So you can get a lot of false negative results. The hospital in our town (Northern California) is charging about $600 for a mammo. There is a service in our area called Health For Her. They will pay for mammos and annual pap screening. Check out your local health department for info on similar services.
while I understand it is hard to afford a mammo when one does not have insurance….. I must say….. just because a person is not yet 40 they should still be having one yearly.
I have no history of Breast Cancer in my family….. so I figured it would be no big deal to go and get my baseline mammo done when I turned 35….. how wrong I was…. 2 days after the baseline I was called and told I had a mass and needed to see a surgeon.
I am now 40 have been on Tamoxifen for 4 years and have had 4 breast biopsies.
SO MY ADVICE IS……FIND THE MONEY if there are no programs in your area to help offset the costs.

Agree with 2nd answerer = check with local health department (usually county). They can set you up with free mammograms and yearly vaginal exams.
