How can a cancer survivor get health insurance?

I have been in remission for 3 years and need to find coverage. Can anybody give me any ideas?

Ideally you need to be in remission for 5 years to be considered cured. The web site below has a lot of good information about getiing coverage. Keep in mind that when you do get insurance they will most likely exclude any services related to your cancer and follow up care. If you can get it through an employer it would likely be most cost effective. You might also check local cancer support groups there may be resources in your area that they could put you in touch with
Congratulations on your remission and good luck with your continued health!

  2. Three years may not be enough. However it depends on the type of cancer you have and the company you apply to. I work in Connecticut as an insurance agent and our Blue Cross has the following guidelines:

Most cancers have a minimum wait of 10 years.
Breast cancer has a minimum wait of 5 years.
Prostate cancer has a minimum wait of 5 years.
Some skin cancers have a minimum wait of 1 year.
Basal cell has a minimum wait of 6 months.

You may want to check with your local Blue Cross and/or the other companies that offer health insurance in your area.

The link below has a listing of insurance department websites for each state. You should be able to find a list of companies that offer health insurance in your area by visiting the insurance department website.

  3. Some states have what they call a "high-risk pool," which is insurance for people who have had health conditions that prevent them from buying other health insurance. Check with your state's Department of Insurance to see if they have one.
