Wouldnt it make more sense if the company let the employees decide how they should allocate their earnings between health insurance and retirement and so forth?

wife of only 1 month, he past away on his honey-moon,we talked befor the wedding and he said he was keeping me on the insurance and not putting her on any thing, I was mailed a check i have not cashed, because i found out that she received half of it, she told me i should of thanked her for my half, she didnt have to give it to me, I was very upset, she was not named on nothing,This is a teamster life insurance would that make a differance?please help….
