Where can I find out if my mom has insurance policies? She doesn't remember who she had policies with.?

Posted on Jul 07, 2008 under Insurance Information |

My mom is in a nursing home now and she used to pay to an insurance man that came to her home every month. Is there a database where I can enter her S.S. # and find who she paid to?

  1. Did she pay in cash or with a check?

If it was a check, then look at her canceled checks for the name of the insurer.

Unfortunately there is no centralized place to check and see if a policy exists. Your best bet is to rummage through her things to see if you can find any evidence of a policy, such as any receipts, statements, or anything that would point you towards a specific company. Check with her former employer (if she had one) to see if there was a plan offered there (the Human Resource department should help you). If none of these are successful, your last and worst option is to actually call insurance companies (the home offices-not local sales offices) to see if they have anything. You'll need her social security number and other important information. Good Luck!

I thought of something that may be of help. There is a bureau that insurance companies use called the MIB (Medical Information Bureau). Insurance companies use this as a central depository of information to prevent fraud. I went on their website and there is a place to find lost insurance policies. The website is attached.

If this insurance agent came to her home it might be possible that other neighbors used the same insurer, or at least might remember who it was. Talk to your Mom's friends and neighbors and see if they know anything.
