Do you have to get a referral from your doctor to see a dermatologist? Also does it cover health insurance?

I would like to know whether you need to go to a doctor to get referred to a dermatologist. My mom told me you had to. I thought you could go to a dermatologist without seeing a doctor. Maybe I was wrong but anyway am I right or is my mom right?

  1. Canadian Kim Says:

You can try calling a dermatologist directly but most do actually need you to be referred by your doctor.

  2. The only answer to this is your insurance carrier. There is a number on the back of your card - call them and ask. Then you will know.

  3. It all depends on what insurance you have. You can also call your primary care doctor, they can tell you.

  4. That depends entirely on your health coverage. Contact them and find out if you need the referral and if they cover dermatologist. There should be an 800 type number on your insurance card.
